American tennis, a short history

On the men's side the United States ran the 1990s. Pete Sampras won 14 majors, seven of them at Wimbledon, and Andre Agassi completed the career Grand Slam with 8. Jimmy Connors, whose 109 tour titles remain the Open-era record, and John McEnroe shaped the era before them, and Jim Courier added 4. Ivan Lendl, an eight-time champion, completes a remarkable line.

The women's record is the richest in tennis. Serena Williams won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most of the Open era, while Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova took 18 apiece. Billie Jean King won 9, Monica Seles nine, Venus Williams 7 and Lindsay Davenport 3. Coco Gauff, with titles at the 2023 US Open and 2025 Roland Garros, carries the line forward.

Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
