Brian Gottfried

Brian Gottfried reached No. 3 in the world in June 1977, days before his season turned into its cruelest afternoon: Guillermo Vilas beat him 6-0, 6-3, 6-0 in the Roland Garros final. Gottfried called it plainly afterward, saying he was powerless, that whatever he tried, Vilas did better. It was the only major singles final he reached, part of a season in which Vilas went on one of the sport's great tears and left the rest of the tour playing catch-up.

He built his game on a heavy topspin forehand and volleys sharp enough to rank among the tour's best, and paired them with a training habit friends loved to retell: Arthur Ashe used to say Gottfried once skipped practice only to get married, then doubled his session the next day to make up for it. That relentlessness paid off most in doubles, where he and Raul Ramirez won three major titles, Wimbledon in 1976 and Roland Garros in 1975 and 1977, on top of 25 career titles overall.
