Guillermo Vilas

No season in the Open era has matched Guillermo Vilas in 1977: sixteen titles, still a record, Roland Garros taken 6-0, 6-3, 6-0 over Brian Gottfried, the US Open won from Jimmy Connors on the clay of Forest Hills, and winning streaks of 46 matches across all surfaces and 53 on clay. It took Ilie Nastase's spaghetti-strung racquet to stop him; Vilas walked off in protest mid-final, and the stringing was banned the next day.

The heavy left-handed topspin behind it made Vilas, alongside Bjorn Borg, the template for modern clay-court tennis, yet half of his 4 majors came on grass, back-to-back Australian Opens in 1978 and 1979. Between tournaments he published two books of poetry. The one prize the game withheld was No. 1. A years-long investigation concluded he should have topped the rankings for weeks across 1975 and 1976; the ATP reviewed the evidence and still said no. His 63 career titles make the argument the computer never did.
