Andres Gomez

Ecuador has one Grand Slam singles champion, and he arrived late. Andres Gomez, a flowing left-hander from Guayaquil, had spent more than a decade collecting clay-court titles without ever passing a major quarter-final. Then at Roland Garros in 1990, aged 30 and playing his twenty-eighth Grand Slam, he finally broke through, and in the final he beat the 20-year-old favourite Andre Agassi 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. That same month he reached No. 4 in the world, his career high, and no Ecuadorian has won a major singles title since.

Paris was the loudest moment in a career that never depended on it. Gomez won 21 career titles in all, and in doubles he was better still, a world No. 1 who took the 1986 US Open with Slobodan Zivojinovic and Roland Garros in 1988 with Emilio Sanchez. He retired in 1995 and the game ran on in the family: his nephew Nicolas Lapentti reached the world's top ten, and his son Emilio Gomez followed him onto the tour.
