Andre Agassi

Nobody punished a serve like Andre Agassi. He took the ball early and hit it back harder, making the return the most feared shot of its era. The denim-shorted Las Vegas showman became the sport's great late bloomer: his 8 majors run four Australian Opens, two US Opens, one Wimbledon and one Roland Garros, and the Paris title, won in 1999 from two sets down against Andrei Medvedev, made him the first man to win all four on three different surfaces. Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996 made it a career Golden Slam.

The fall came first. In November 1997, injured and adrift, he fell to No. 141 and rebuilt on the Challenger circuit. Two years later he was world No. 1 again, headed for 101 weeks at the top and 60 career titles. He measured himself against Pete Sampras for a decade, played on until a tearful farewell at the 2006 US Open, and in 2001 married Steffi Graf, pairing his career Golden Slam with her calendar-year one.

The family business: Cruz Hewitt debuts where his father won, and he is far from the only one

Twenty-two years. That is how long it has been since Lleyton Hewitt won the title in Washington, and this week his son came through qualifying into the main draw of the same tournament. Cruz Hewitt is 17, ranked outside the top 600, and plays Marcos Giron in the first round. It is his first ATP main draw, and it is a smaller novelty than it sounds. The tour is thick with players whose surname arrived before they did.
