Marcos Baghdatis

Marcos Baghdatis arrived at the 2006 Australian Open unseeded and left a star: the 20-year-old Cypriot beat three seeds, took the first set off Roger Federer in the final and pushed him to four before falling 5-7, 7-5, 6-0, 6-2. Cyprus emptied its flags into Rod Laver Arena that fortnight, a backdrop that followed him for the rest of his career. Five months later he reached the Wimbledon semifinals, and that August he peaked at No. 8, the highest any Cypriot has ranked. He added 4 career titles and stayed a crowd favourite long after the ranking slid.

The other lasting image came in 2012 at the same Australian Open, a break down against Stanislas Wawrinka, when he smashed four racquets in a row at the changeover and drew a fine for it. He kept playing until Wimbledon 2019, beating Brayden Schnur in the first round before Matteo Berrettini ended his career in the second, and he left Centre Court in tears, handing his racquets and shoes into the crowd that had always been loudest for him.
