When Matteo Berrettini's serve and forehand are on, grass barely slows the ball down. In 2021 the Roman became the first Italian to reach a Wimbledon singles final, taking the opening set off Novak Djokovic in a tiebreak before the champion pulled away in four. By January 2022 he stood at a career-high world No. 6, with Grand Slam semi-finals in New York and Melbourne alongside the grass-court run. His 10 career titles lean on those same two shots.
The body kept interrupting. Hand surgery in 2022, a Covid withdrawal on the eve of Wimbledon, then abdominal and ankle injuries that wrecked 2023; he came back from six months out in March 2024 and was voted the ATP's Comeback Player of the Year. For Italy he has been close to untouchable, unbeaten in singles through the 2024 and 2025 Davis Cup wins, and he sealed the 2025 final against Spain. At 30 he remains a handful on grass, taking Grigor Dimitrov to five sets in the 2026 Wimbledon third round.
10-7 in the deciding tiebreak. That is how Arthur Fery, a British wildcard ranked No. 114, finished off Grigor Dimitrov 7-5 3-6 4-6 6-4 7-6(7) on Centre Court, and reached the first Grand Slam quarter-final of his career.
