Stan Wawrinka

For years Stan Wawrinka was Switzerland's other man, the steady second name behind a compatriot who seemed to own the sport. Then, past 28, he stopped waiting. His one-handed backhand, which John McEnroe once called the best in the game, turned into the heaviest shot in tennis, a stroke he could load and flatten from anywhere in the court. He rose to a career high of world No. 3 in January 2014 and stayed dangerous long after the seedings said he should not be.

His 3 Grand Slam titles share a signature no other man can claim: he beat the reigning world No. 1 in every final. He took the 2014 Australian Open past Rafael Nadal, the 2015 Roland Garros and the 2016 US Open both past Novak Djokovic, one crown on each of hard, clay and the New York night. Knee surgery in 2017 cost him a season, yet he kept coming back, and he was still on tour into his 40s, born in 1985 and playing on well past the point most peers had left.
