Joao Fonseca

At 17, Joao Fonseca won the December 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah unbeaten as the lowest ranked qualifier. A month later he beat ninth seed Andrey Rublev 7-6(1), 6-3, 7-6(5) at the 2025 Australian Open on his Grand Slam debut. Junior world No. 1 in 2023 after winning the US Open boys' title, the Rio de Janeiro native builds everything on first-strike tennis and an explosive forehand. Titles in Buenos Aires and Basel followed in 2025, Basel making him Brazil's first ATP 500 champion, and by November he had reached a career-high No. 24.

The defining night came at Roland Garros in 2026. Two sets down to Novak Djokovic, Fonseca won 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in under five hours, the first teenager to beat Djokovic at a major, then rode the surge to the quarter-finals. Travelling Brazilian fans turn his matches into home fixtures wherever he plays, waiting on their first men's major champion since Gustavo Kuerten in 2001. Fonseca looks built to end that wait.
