Brazilian tennis, a short history
The men's story belongs to Gustavo Kuerten, 3 Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros in 1997, 2000 and 2001, and the only Brazilian to reach world No. 1. His 20 tour-level titles top the national list. Fernando Meligeni reached the Roland Garros semi-finals in 1999, and earlier generations produced Luiz Mattar, Thomaz Koch and the recent mainstay Thomaz Bellucci.
The women's heritage runs through Maria Bueno, winner of 7 Grand Slam singles titles in the amateur era and a US Open semi-finalist as late as 1968. Beatriz Haddad Maia renewed that line with a Roland Garros semi-final in 2023 and 4 tour titles, while Patricia Medrado and Suzana Gesteira built the depth behind them.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
