Learner Tien

Learner Tien arrived all at once at the 2025 Australian Open, a 19-year-old qualifier who outlasted fifth seed Daniil Medvedev over five sets and nearly five hours, winning a deciding 10-point tiebreak, then went on to the fourth round. The left-hander from Irvine, California takes the ball early and redirects pace rather than supplying it, a game with more patience than a teenager should own. His parents fled Vietnam as refugees; his mother, a math teacher, named him Learner, and his sister, for their lawyer father, is Justice.

Michael Chang took over as coach in July 2025 and the climb steepened. Tien won his first tour title in Metz that autumn past Cameron Norrie, added the Next Gen ATP Finals crown, and in May 2026 beat Mariano Navone for the Geneva title, the youngest American man to win on European clay since Chang himself at the 1989 French Open. By late June 2026 he had reached a career-high No. 17, born in December 2005 and already third among American men.

ATP rankings

ATP rankings: Jodar and Tien climb to the edge of the top 10, at 19 and 20

Eleven. That is where Rafael Jodar stands on the ATP rankings after his Montreal semi-final, up from 15 and the best ranking of his career. He is 19, the youngest man in the top 20, and Learner Tien, 20, sits one place behind him at 12 after losing his own semi-final, also a career best, up from 19.

Montreal

Shelton wins Montreal without facing a break point in the final

Zero. That is how many break points Ben Shelton faced in the Montreal final. He beat Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6(4) for the National Bank Open title, holding all 10 of his service games and never once letting Nakashima near the serve.
