Dominic Thiem

Few players struck a ball with the violence Dominic Thiem did. The one-handed backhand, whipped with a full-body lash, made him the rare man willing to trade blows with Rafael Nadal on clay: he lost the 2018 and 2019 Roland Garros finals to him, then pushed Novak Djokovic to five sets in the 2020 Australian Open final. By March 2020 he was world No. 3.

The breakthrough arrived in the strangest setting tennis has known, an empty Arthur Ashe Stadium in the pandemic September of 2020.
