Richard Gasquet

Richard Gasquet was nine when French Tennis Magazine put him on its cover as the nation's next great hope, and the one-handed backhand he kept into adulthood stayed the most beautiful of his generation, all whip and timing with almost no backswing. He reached world No. 7 in July 2007, the fortnight he beat Andy Roddick from two sets down at Wimbledon, 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 8-6, before Roger Federer stopped him in the semi-final. Two more slam semi-finals followed, at the US Open in 2013 and Wimbledon again in 2015, alongside 16 career titles.

A positive test for a trace of cocaine at Miami in 2009 briefly ended his career on paper; the Court of Arbitration for Sport cleared him that December, ruling the contamination came from kissing a woman in a nightclub. He played on another sixteen years and retired as the winningest Frenchman in tour history, his last match a second round loss to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros 2025, the tournament he always called the greatest in the world.
