Mikhail Youzhny

Mikhail Youzhny built his career around a one-handed backhand and a habit of coming back from places that looked finished. Nothing showed it better than the 2002 Davis Cup final in Paris, where he walked out for the deciding fifth rubber against Paul-Henri Mathieu, lost the first two sets 3-6, 2-6, and won the next three to hand Russia its first Davis Cup title. That nerve carried him to two US Open semi-finals, in 2006 and 2010, and a career-high ranking of world No. 8 in January 2008, repeated in October 2010, on the way to 10 career titles.

Fans called him the Colonel for the salute he gave after every win, racquet raised to his temple like a cap, a tribute to his father, an army officer who died in 2002. He earned a philosophy PhD in 2011, midway through his playing days, with a thesis comparing professional tennis players. He closed out his career at the 2018 St Petersburg Open, beating Mirza Basic for his last win before Roberto Bautista Agut ended the run. He went on to coach Denis Shapovalov.
