John Isner

No score will ever again read 70-68. That was the fifth set John Isner won against Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon 2010, eleven hours and five minutes spread across three days, still the longest match in tennis history. Eight years later he pushed a Wimbledon semi-final the other way, losing 26-24 in the fifth to Kevin Anderson in six hours and 36 minutes. Between those two marathons sat the best week of his career: the 2018 Miami Masters title, beating Alexander Zverev in the final, which carried him to a career-high No. 8.

The serve was built at the University of Georgia, where he went 143-28 in singles and helped the Bulldogs to a national title before turning pro in 2007, unusually late for the modern tour. It carried him to 16 career titles and, by his retirement at the 2023 US Open, 14,470 aces, the most anyone has hit in the sport's history. He was 38 and had been serving bombs for grateful, exhausted crowds for seventeen years.
