Kevin Anderson

The four days that define Kevin Anderson came at Wimbledon in 2018. In the quarter-final he stood two sets down and match point down to defending champion Roger Federer and won 13-11 in the fifth. The semi-final against John Isner ran to 26-24 in the fifth set, six hours and 36 minutes, the second longest Grand Slam match ever played. Novak Djokovic beat an emptied man in the final. He had already lost the 2017 US Open final to Rafael Nadal; that July he reached a career-high No. 5.

Johannesburg raised him, American college tennis made him: at the University of Illinois he was a three-time All-American and 2006 NCAA doubles champion, the base for the 6ft 8in serve that carried everything after. He won 7 career titles, the last at Newport in 2021, and served as ATP Player Council president. A worn body forced retirement in May 2022 at 35; a brief 2023 comeback brought a quarter-final back at Newport before US Open qualifying closed the career for good.
