Sebastien Grosjean

Two match points from a Grand Slam final, Sebastien Grosjean let it slip in the strangest way. Up two sets and 5-3 on serve against Arnaud Clement in the 2001 Australian Open semifinal, the Marseille player could not close it out, and Clement ran the match to five sets and through. Grosjean reached the Roland Garros semifinal that same year and Wimbledon semifinals in both 2003 and 2004, all four majors chasing a final that never arrived. At 1.75 meters he leaned on reflexes rather than reach, quick enough at net to finish points before bigger men had reset.

The nearest he got to a major trophy was the 2001 Tennis Masters Cup in Sydney, where Lleyton Hewitt beat him in straight sets. Weeks earlier Grosjean had helped France beat Australia in Melbourne for the Davis Cup, part of a run to 4 career titles and world No. 4 in October 2002. He retired in 2010 and stayed close to the game, coaching Richard Gasquet, then Arthur Fils, and leading France as Davis Cup captain from 2018.
