Kei Nishikori

One New York fortnight in 2014 turned Kei Nishikori into a national event. He beat Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in succession at the US Open to become the first Asian man in a Grand Slam singles final, where Marin Cilic stopped him. His early-strike returning and flat backhand took time away from bigger men, and carried him to a career-high No. 4 in March 2015 and two more semi-finals in New York. At the 2016 Rio Olympics he beat Rafael Nadal for bronze, Japan's first Olympic tennis medal in 96 years.

The body kept interrupting the story. A torn wrist tendon ended his 2017 season in August, and hip surgery in January 2022 took away almost two years and sent the rebuild through Challenger qualifying. He came back every time, and his 12 career titles were won around the setbacks, not before them. In May 2026, at 36, Nishikori announced the season would be his last, still choosing qualifying draws over a ceremonial farewell lap.
