Japanese tennis, a short history
12 tour titles make Kei Nishikori the most decorated Japanese man, and his run to the 2014 US Open final remains the country's only men's Grand Slam final, backed by three US Open semis between 2014 and 2018. Yoshihito Nishioka adds 3 tour titles to the modern record.
4 Grand Slam titles place Naomi Osaka at the front of Japan's women, two Australian Opens and two US Opens, and in 2019 she became the first Asian player to be ranked world No. 1 in singles. Kimiko Date Krumm reached three major semifinals in the 1990s and a career high of No. 4, while Kazuko Sawamatsu (11 titles), Ai Sugiyama and Naoko Sawamatsu deepen the heritage.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
