Tim Henman

Six major semifinals, four at Wimbledon, and Tim Henman never reached a final. Closest was 2001: two points from a two sets to one lead over Goran Ivanisevic when rain stopped play, a match that ran to three days before Ivanisevic came through in five and lifted the title. Henman also lost Wimbledon semifinals in 1998, 1999 and 2002, plus two more at the US Open and Roland Garros in 2004. Grass suited his serve and volley better than any surface, but never returned the final it owed him.

The crowd on Aorangi Terrace took his name anyway. Henman Hill formed there in the late 1990s as home support gathered under the big screen, outlasting every run that fell short of a trophy. He reached No. 4 in July 2002, the highest by a Briton before Andy Murray, and closed his career with 11 titles from a serve-volley game going extinct around him. He retired in 2007, at the US Open and a Davis Cup tie against Croatia.
