David Nalbandian

A week before the 2005 Masters Cup, David Nalbandian was on holiday; he entered Shanghai as an alternate and won the title, beating Roger Federer from two sets down in the final, 6-7(4), 6-7(11), 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(3). It was the biggest of his 11 career titles, and the closest he came to the major that got away: in 2002 he reached the Wimbledon final on his debut there, the first man to do so in the Open era, losing to Lleyton Hewitt. Five slam semifinals and a career-high No. 3 in March 2006 told the same story.

In autumn 2007 he won Madrid past Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Federer in one week, still the only man to beat all three at one tournament, then beat Federer and Nadal again to take Paris two weeks later. At Queen's in 2012 he was disqualified while leading the final against Marin Cilic, after kicking an advertising board into a line judge's shin. Shoulder surgery ended it; he retired in October 2013.
