David Ferrer

When a teenage David Ferrer slacked off, coach Javier Piles locked him in a dark ball cupboard with bread and water. Ferrer quit, spent a week on a construction site, then came back and asked to play. The game he built never gave a cheap point away: no single weapon, just legs, lungs and a return that made bigger hitters play one more ball. It carried him to a career-high No. 3 in July 2013 and 27 career titles.

His one major final came at Roland Garros that spring, reached without dropping a set and ended by Rafael Nadal, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Six slam semi-finals and the best-player-never-to-win-one tag followed him around; three Davis Cups with Spain, in 2008, 2009 and 2011, were the answer he could hold. He said goodbye at home at 37, beaten by Alexander Zverev at the 2019 Madrid Open, and since 2023 has captained the Spanish Davis Cup team he once carried.
