Juan Martin del Potro

No forehand of his generation hit harder. Juan Martin del Potro's flat, wrist-snapped drive won him the 2009 US Open at 20, past Rafael Nadal in the semifinal, then Roger Federer in a five-set final, from a set and a break down, ending Federer's run of five straight New York titles. It stayed his 1 slam, and the wrist that powered everything soon gave way: four surgeries, one on the right and three on the left, swallowed whole seasons.

The 2016 comeback made him tennis's most loved man. He stunned Novak Djokovic in the opening round in Rio and took Olympic silver, then dragged Argentina to its first Davis Cup title, beating Marin Cilic from two sets down in the final. By August 2018 he was world No. 3, and only Djokovic stopped him in a second US Open final. A fractured kneecap stole what the wrist had left, and the farewell came in Buenos Aires in February 2022, in tears before a full house, 22 career titles behind him.
