Thomas Johansson

Thomas Johansson had never reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal before Melbourne 2002. Then the draw blew apart and the clean first-strike game built in Linkoping held its nerve to the end: seeded 16th, he beat the favoured Marat Safin 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 in the final, the first 16 seed ever to win a major. It made him the first Swedish champion since Stefan Edberg in 1992, and no Swedish man has followed since. He climbed to a career-high No. 7 that June, then a knee injury erased the rest of the year and all of 2003.

The comeback was quietly substantial: a Wimbledon semifinal in 2005, and at 33 an Olympic silver at Beijing 2008, where he and Simon Aspelin stretched Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka to four sets in the doubles final. He retired in 2009 with 9 career titles, 1 of them that Melbourne fortnight, then took his craft to the bench, coaching David Goffin, Kei Nishikori and Daniil Medvedev among others.
