Stefan Edberg

The purest serve-and-volleyer of his era came in behind everything, first serve and second, trusting quick feet and the finest backhand volley in the game. Stefan Edberg announced himself early: in 1983 he became the only player of the open era to win the junior Grand Slam, and at 19 he took the 1985 Australian Open, still on grass then. His 6 majors arrived in perfect pairs, two each at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, with Roland Garros escaping him in a five-set 1989 final.

Wimbledon staged his defining trilogy: three straight finals against Boris Becker from 1988 to 1990, Edberg winning the first and the last, the 1990 decider closed 6-4 in the fifth. He spent 72 weeks at No. 1 and won 45 career titles, yet his manner outlasted the trophies: five ATP sportsmanship awards, and since 1996 the prize has carried his name. From 2014 to 2015 he coached Roger Federer, sending the net-rushing instinct forward a generation.
