Cedric Pioline

Both of Cedric Pioline's Grand Slam finals ran into the same wall. At the 1993 US Open he beat the world No. 1 Jim Courier on the way to the title match, then lost it in straight sets to Pete Sampras; four years later Sampras did it again on Wimbledon's Centre Court, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. The elegant one-handed backhand carried him to major semifinals at Roland Garros in 1998 and the US Open in 1999, and to a career-high No. 5 in May 2000, soon after the biggest of his 5 career titles at Monte Carlo.

Both parents were volleyball players; his Romanian mother Adriana played in a World Championship final in 1956. France got the payoff. In the 1996 Davis Cup final in Malmö he beat Stefan Edberg in straight sets in the opening rubber of the Swede's farewell tie, and in 2001 in Melbourne his doubles win with Fabrice Santoro swung the final against Australia. He retired in 2002 and later ran the Paris Masters as tournament director.
