Gaston Gaudio

Two championship points from defeat, Gaston Gaudio won Roland Garros. Unseeded and ranked No. 44 in 2004, he lost the first set of the final 0-6 to his compatriot Guillermo Coria, went two sets down, then watched the cramping favourite unravel. Coria served for the title twice; Gaudio took it 0-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 8-6, the first men's major champion of the Open era to save championship points in the final, and the first Argentine slam winner since Guillermo Vilas in 1979.

He never reached another major semi-final, and the 1 major of his career sat uneasily on a player who never quite trusted his own game. The one-handed backhand from Temperley earned 8 career titles, every one on clay, and a career-high No. 5 in April 2005. He retired in 2011 and later spoke openly about treatment for depression. The second act reunited the old rivals: from 2018 he shared Argentina's Davis Cup captaincy with Coria and Guillermo Canas, then held it alone in 2019.
