Guillermo Coria

Two sets and a match point up, Guillermo Coria lost the 2004 Roland Garros final to his compatriot Gaston Gaudio, cramping through the decider as it slipped away 0-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 8-6. Nicknamed El Mago for his touch and disguise, the Rosario native was the best clay-court player alive through 2003 and 2004, rising to No. 3 in the world that May. Consecutive Roland Garros semi-finals in 2003 and 2004 framed the closest he came to the title he never won.

Within a year the game that made him unhittable on clay turned on him. At Umag in 2005 his serve seized into the yips, a full-body freeze on a motion he had trusted since childhood, and it never let go. He chased his rhythm through comebacks that rarely lasted, retiring in 2009 at 27 with 10 career titles. He returned to the sport as Argentina's Davis Cup captain from 2021 to 2024, guiding the team he once carried alone back to the Finals stage.
