Fernando Gonzalez

No forehand in tennis looked more like a threat than Fernando Gonzalez's. Built in Santiago and sharpened as a teenager in Miami, it carried him to world No. 5 in January 2007 and, weeks later, to the Australian Open final, the best slam run of his career. Roger Federer ended it in three tight sets, and a Roland Garros semi-final two years later was as close as he came again. Chile called him El Bombardero de La Reina, the bomber from La Reina, and Mano de Piedra, hand of stone, for a shot that hurried even the best returners on tour.

His finest week wore two medals. At the 2004 Athens Olympics he won singles bronze, then hours later teamed with Nicolas Massu to save four match points and take doubles gold, Chile's first ever. Four years on in Beijing he beat James Blake for singles silver, losing the final to Rafael Nadal. He retired in 2012 at 31, with 13 career titles and no major to match the forehand.
