Andy Roddick

The serve was the loudest in tennis. Andy Roddick's abbreviated windup produced a then world record 155 mph delivery in a 2004 Davis Cup tie, and it powered the defining American career of his era. At the 2003 US Open he beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in straight sets, closing with three aces, and finished that year, aged 21, as world No. 1. He spent 13 weeks at the top; no American man has won a major since that New York fortnight.

Roger Federer stood between him and everything else. All four of his other major finals ended against the Swiss: Wimbledon in 2004, 2005 and 2009, plus the 2006 US Open. The 2009 final was the harshest, a 16-14 fifth set after four hours and 17 minutes in which Roddick lost serve only once, in the final game. He still gathered 32 career titles before retiring at the 2012 US Open, announcing it on his 30th birthday. A great who kept walking into the greatest.
