Chilean tennis, a short history
Chilean men have come within one match of a Grand Slam title twice. Marcelo Rios reached the 1998 Australian Open final and in March that year became the first South American to top the ATP rankings, still the only man to do so without winning a major. His 18 tour titles lead all Chileans. Fernando Gonzalez made the 2007 Australian Open final and a Roland Garros semi-final in 2009, winning 13 titles. Nicolas Massu took singles and doubles gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics, with Gonzalez his doubles partner.
The women's record is more modest. Ana Maria Arias stands as the most decorated, with 2 tour-level titles.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
