Marcelo Rios

Marcelo Rios remains the only man to reach world No. 1 without ever winning a major. He got there on 30 March 1998, aged 22, off the Sunshine Double: Greg Rusedski beaten in three tight sets at Indian Wells, then Andre Agassi in straights in Miami. His one Grand Slam final had come weeks earlier in Melbourne, where Petr Korda broke his rhythm early and closed it out in three. Left-handed and unhurried, Rios played with a wrist and a sense of angle that rivals still rate among the best hands the tour has seen.

The talent never needed the temper that came with it. Rios clashed with umpires, journalists and sponsors, and treated the expectations of a No. 1 as someone else's problem, building 18 career titles being exactly himself instead. A chronic back injury caught up with him in his mid-twenties: his last full season on tour ended at 27, and he confirmed his retirement in July 2004.
