Martin Verkerk

Martin Verkerk arrived at Roland Garros in 2003 ranked 46th, playing only his third major, and left as the first Dutchman ever to reach a final there. He beat Carlos Moya in a near four hour marathon, 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 4-6, 8-6, then dismantled Guillermo Coria, who smashed a racket into a ball girl in his frustration, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6. The run ended fast: Juan Carlos Ferrero won the final 6-1, 6-3, 6-2. No Dutch man has reached a Roland Garros final since.

The serve and one-handed backhand that carried him through Paris made him third on tour in aces that season and pushed him to a career-high No. 14 that September. He added the 2 career titles in Milan and, a year later, at Amersfoort, where shoulder pain in the final led to surgery that October. Recurring shoulder trouble and mononucleosis followed, and a third round was as far as he ever got again at a major. He retired in 2008, 0 major final his whole Grand Slam story.
