Mark Philippoussis

They called him Scud for the serve, once clocked at 229 kph. At nineteen Mark Philippoussis used it to beat world No. 1 Pete Sampras in straight sets at the 1996 Australian Open. The majors stopped him at the doorstep twice: the 1998 US Open final went to Patrick Rafter in four all-Australian sets, and at Wimbledon 2003, days after his 46 aces against Andre Agassi, Roger Federer beat him in straight sets for his first major.

Davis Cup repaid what the finals withheld. In Nice in 1999 he won both singles on indoor clay, beating Cedric Pioline to clinch Australia's first title since 1986; in Melbourne four years later he tore a pectoral muscle mid-final and still closed out Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-0 in the fifth set for another. Around those peaks sat a career-high No. 8, three knee operations, and comebacks stretching on and off to 2015. He banked 11 career titles, then resurfaced as the bachelor on NBC's Age of Love, a long way from Nice.
