Patrick Rafter

The kick serve climbed, and Patrick Rafter followed it in behind first delivery and second, chipping and charging on return too: the athlete's version of serve and volley. Seeded 13th, he broke through at the 1997 US Open, beating Greg Rusedski in four sets for his first major, then defended the title in 1998, an all-Australian final against Mark Philippoussis won with just five unforced errors. Both of his 2 majors came in New York, where the legs mattered most.

In July 1999 he reached world No. 1 and held it for one week, the shortest reign in ATP history. Wimbledon gave him two finals and took both away: Pete Sampras in four sets in 2000, then Goran Ivanisevic 9-7 in the fifth in 2001, the Monday people's final. A shoulder first operated on in 1999 closed his career after the 2001 season, at 28, with 12 career titles banked. Four Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Awards and the Brisbane arena that bears his name say what the game thought of him.
