Todd Martin

The New York fortnight that defines Todd Martin came in 1999. Two sets and a bagel down to Greg Rusedski, then 4-1 down in the fifth, he won twenty of the last twenty-one points, finishing at 12:50 am; days later he took Andre Agassi to five sets in the US Open final, his second, five years after Pete Sampras beat him in straight sets for the 1994 Australian Open title. The hardest loss was neither: at Wimbledon in 1996 he led MaliVai Washington 5-1 in the fifth set of their semifinal, served for the match twice, and fell 10-8.

The game came off a serve launched from 6ft 6in and one of the cleanest two-handed backhands of his generation; peers twice elected him ATP Player Council president. He banked 8 career titles, the 1995 Davis Cup with the United States and a career-high No. 4 in September 1999, retired in 2004, and from 2014 to the end of 2022 ran the International Tennis Hall of Fame as CEO.
