Alex Corretja

The match people remember Alex Corretja for is one he lost: the 1996 US Open quarter-final in which he held match point in a fifth-set tiebreak before a vomiting Pete Sampras escaped after four hours and nine minutes. His own peak came in Hannover in 1998, where he beat Carlos Moya from two sets down, 3-6, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-5, to win the Masters Cup, the first man to take the season finale without a Grand Slam title.

Moya also denied him the 1998 Roland Garros final, and Gustavo Kuerten ran away with the 2001 final; three Paris semi-finals in all for a clay-courter with a classical one-handed backhand. He reached No. 2 in February 1999, won the doubles alongside Joan Balcells as Spain lifted its first Davis Cup in Barcelona in 2000, and collected 17 career titles. Afterwards he coached Andy Murray from 2008 to 2011, captained Spain's Davis Cup team in 2012 and 2013, and settled into the Eurosport commentary box.
