Rainer Schuettler

Rainer Schuettler ran opponents into the ground before he ever had to outplay them, a German who treated fitness as a weapon. It carried him to the 2003 Australian Open final at 26, where Andre Agassi beat him in straight sets, and to that year's Masters Cup semi-final, where Agassi beat him again. He climbed to a career high of world number 5 in April 2004, then added Olympic silver in doubles that Athens summer with Nicolas Kiefer, losing a five-set final to Chile's Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu.

By 2008 he was ranked 94th, thirteen straight majors without reaching the third round. Wimbledon said otherwise: unseeded at 32, he outlasted Arnaud Clement in a five-hour, two-day fifth set to reach his first semi-final there, falling only to Rafael Nadal en route to the title. The run won him the ATP's Comeback Player of the Year award, proof of a career built on legs that refused to quit, 4 titles collected across stretches when lesser bodies would have broken down first.
