German tennis, a short history
6 Grand Slam titles belong to Boris Becker, three of them at Wimbledon, where in 1985 he became the youngest men's champion at 17. Michael Stich took Wimbledon in 1991, and Alexander Zverev finally landed a major at Roland Garros 2026 after three runner-up finishes, then added a first Wimbledon final five weeks later. Rainer Schuettler reached the 2003 Australian Open final.
22 Grand Slam titles make Steffi Graf the standard the country measures itself against; in 1988 she won all four majors and Olympic gold, the only Golden Slam in tennis history, and she spent a WTA-record 377 weeks at world No. 1, more than any woman in the sport's history. Angelique Kerber carried the line forward with 3 majors, the Australian and US Opens in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2018. Anke Huber reached the 1996 Australian Open final, Sabine Lisicki the 2013 Wimbledon final, Sylvia Hanika the 1981 Roland Garros final, and Helga Masthoff the 1970 Roland Garros final.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
