Australian tennis, a short history

The men own one of the sport's deepest histories. Rod Laver won all four majors in 1969 to complete a calendar Grand Slam, taking 5 major titles in all. John Newcombe also won 5 majors, and Ken Rosewall added 4. Lleyton Hewitt carried the line into the modern era with the 2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon, and Nick Kyrgios reached the 2022 Wimbledon final. Tony Roche made three major finals without a title.

The women's record is just as grand. Margaret Court stands on 11 of her 24 Grand Slam singles titles here, including her own 1970 calendar sweep, and Evonne Goolagong won 7 majors across the 1970s into 1980. Hana Mandlikova claimed 4 in Australian colours, Ashleigh Barty won 3 and reached world No. 1, and Kerry Reid took the 1977 Australian Open.

Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
