John Newcombe

The droopy moustache was the most famous in tennis, and the serve and volley behind it carried John Newcombe to seven Grand Slam singles titles. The split matters here: the 1967 Wimbledon and US crowns came as an amateur, at Wimbledon as the last amateur champion of all, while the five these records cover arrived after tennis went open, Wimbledon in 1970 and 1971, the US Open in 1973, the Australian Open in 1973 and 1975. The kick serve grew into a flat hammer, the forehand drove hard, and the net was where his points ended.

Doubles doubled the legend. He won 17 major men's doubles titles, most of them alongside Tony Roche, a record that stood until the Bryan brothers passed it in 2013. In June 1974 he became the second man to hold No. 1 in the new ATP rankings, and as Davis Cup captain he steered Australia past France in Nice for the 1999 title. Newk stayed the face of Australian tennis long after the final volley.
