Victor Pecci

Victor Pecci arrived at the 1979 Roland Garros final having beaten Guillermo Vilas in the quarterfinal and Jimmy Connors in the semifinal, both in straight sets. Bjorn Borg stopped him in four, 6-3, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4, but the run made Pecci the first Paraguayan to reach a major final and remains the high point of the country's tennis history. He was 23, stood 1.93 metres, and played an unhurried serve and volley game that suited Paris more than most expected from a clay-raised South American. A diamond stud in one ear became his signature on tour.

Pecci reached No. 9 in the world in March 1980 and added a second Roland Garros semifinal in 1981, finishing with 10 career titles. He helped push Paraguay into the Davis Cup World Group in 1982, then returned to the sport after retiring in 1990 as the country's Davis Cup captain and, from 2013, as its Minister of Sports. No Paraguayan man has come close to matching him since.
