Jimmy Connors

Nobody made tennis feel more like a fight. Jimmy Connors, the flat-hitting left-hander from East St. Louis, returned serve better than anyone of his era and treated every point as personal. In 1974 he won three of the four majors and was barred from Roland Garros over his World Team Tennis contract, the one gap in a near-perfect season. His 8 Grand Slam titles lean on New York: five US Opens, and he is still the only man to win that title on grass, clay and hard courts as the event changed surfaces beneath him.

He held No. 1 for 268 weeks, 160 of them in one unbroken run, and gathered 110 career titles, more than any other man in the Open era. His rivalries with Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe carried tennis through its boom years, yet the defining image came last: the 1991 US Open, aged 39 and ranked 174, a five-set escape against Aaron Krickstein on his birthday and one final semifinal run.

The family business: Cruz Hewitt debuts where his father won, and he is far from the only one

Twenty-two years. That is how long it has been since Lleyton Hewitt won the title in Washington, and this week his son came through qualifying into the main draw of the same tournament. Cruz Hewitt is 17, ranked outside the top 600, and plays Marcos Giron in the first round. It is his first ATP main draw, and it is a smaller novelty than it sounds. The tour is thick with players whose surname arrived before they did.
