John McEnroe

Nobody played the front of the court like him. John McEnroe served left-handed from a closed, back-turned stance, followed it in and won points with his hands, touch volleys that looked like reflex but were really feel. The temper was part of the theatre; "You cannot be serious" entered the language at Wimbledon in 1981, the fortnight he beat Bjorn Borg to end the Swede's run of five straight titles. A year earlier came the 1980 final and its 18-16 tiebreak, McEnroe saving five championship points before losing in five sets. His 7 majors split into three Wimbledons and four US Opens.

The peak was 1984: 82-3, the best single season the men's game has seen, and the loss he never got over, a two-set lead surrendered to Ivan Lendl in the Roland Garros final. He held No. 1 for 170 weeks and collected 78 career titles, then built a second act as the voice of tennis on TV, as candid in the booth as he was combustible on court.

Twenty-two years. That is how long it has been since Lleyton Hewitt won the title in Washington, and this week his son came through qualifying into the main draw of the same tournament. Cruz Hewitt is 17, ranked outside the top 600, and plays Marcos Giron in the first round. It is his first ATP main draw, and it is a smaller novelty than it sounds. The tour is thick with players whose surname arrived before they did.
