Petr Korda

Petr Korda took the ball earlier than almost anyone of his era, a whippy Prague left-hander with a classical one-handed backhand and a scissor-kick celebration he saved for winning. The breakthrough came late and came twice. At 24 he reached the 1992 Roland Garros final and was dismantled by Jim Courier; at 30 he finally landed the major, beating Marcelo Rios 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in 85 minutes for the 1998 Australian Open and rising to a career-high No. 2 the following Monday.

That same year supplied the asterisk: after his Wimbledon quarterfinal he tested positive for nandrolone, and he retired shortly before the twelve-month ban began in September 1999. He left with 11 career titles, 1 of them a major, and a remarkable second act as a sporting father: son Sebastian plays the ATP tour, and daughters Nelly and Jessica took the family swing to golf, Nelly all the way to world No. 1.

The family business: Cruz Hewitt debuts where his father won, and he is far from the only one

Twenty-two years. That is how long it has been since Lleyton Hewitt won the title in Washington, and this week his son came through qualifying into the main draw of the same tournament. Cruz Hewitt is 17, ranked outside the top 600, and plays Marcos Giron in the first round. It is his first ATP main draw, and it is a smaller novelty than it sounds. The tour is thick with players whose surname arrived before they did.
