Czech tennis, a short history
On the men's side the towering figure is Jan Kodes, a three-time major champion at Wimbledon in 1973 and Roland Garros in 1970 and 1971, twice a US Open finalist, who climbed to world No. 5 in 1973. Petr Korda won the Australian Open in 1998 and reached the 1992 Roland Garros final, and Tomas Berdych, a 14-title winner, reached the 2010 Wimbledon final and six major semifinals.
The women carry the richer trophy haul. Petra Kvitova won Wimbledon twice, in 2011 and 2014, and tops the country's all-time list with 31 tour titles; Jana Novotna won Wimbledon in 1998 after three earlier finals. More recently Barbora Krejcikova took Roland Garros in 2021 and Wimbledon in 2024, and Marketa Vondrousova won Wimbledon in 2023. Karolina Pliskova, a two-time major finalist, reached world No. 1 in 2017. The tradition renewed itself in 2026, when Wimbledon staged an all-Czech final: Linda Noskova, 21, beat Karolina Muchova 6-2 5-7 6-3 for her first major.
Titles and records run from 1968, the start of the Open era.
