Helena Sukova

Helena Sukova authored one of the sport's great upsets at 19. In the 1984 Australian Open semifinals she beat Martina Navratilova 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, ending a 74-match winning streak and Navratilova's run at a calendar-year Grand Slam. It never bought her a major of her own: Chris Evert beat her in that final, Navratilova took the 1986 US Open final, and Steffi Graf denied her twice more, in Melbourne in 1989 and New York in 1993.

The frame explained the game: six foot two, all serve and volley, and it built a doubles empire. Nine major women's doubles titles, five more in mixed, three of those beside her brother Cyril Suk, and the doubles No. 1 ranking in 1990 next to a singles peak of world No. 4. Tennis was inherited; her mother Vera Sukova reached the 1962 Wimbledon final. She retired in 1998 with 9 career titles and entered the Hall of Fame in 2018, a champion whose one missing line only sharpens the rest.
