Arantxa Sanchez Vicario

Bud Collins named her the Barcelona Bumblebee, unceasing in pursuit of balls none too distant to be retrieved, and the running broke a generation of bigger hitters. At 17 she beat world No. 1 Steffi Graf 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 for the 1989 Roland Garros title, the youngest Paris champion tennis had seen. Her 4 majors split three Roland Garros crowns and the 1994 US Open, and seven of her twelve Grand Slam finals came against Graf.

The 1994 season lifted her to the top of the sport: champion at Roland Garros and the US Open, the latter again over Graf, and on 6 February 1995 the first Spanish player ever ranked world No. 1, a place she held for twelve weeks while also topping the doubles list. A third Paris title followed in 1998 over Monica Seles. Alongside 29 career titles she collected four Olympic medals across Barcelona and Atlanta and five Fed Cup trophies with Spain, and in 2007 the Hall of Fame called.

The family business: Cruz Hewitt debuts where his father won, and he is far from the only one

Twenty-two years. That is how long it has been since Lleyton Hewitt won the title in Washington, and this week his son came through qualifying into the main draw of the same tournament. Cruz Hewitt is 17, ranked outside the top 600, and plays Marcos Giron in the first round. It is his first ATP main draw, and it is a smaller novelty than it sounds. The tour is thick with players whose surname arrived before they did.
