Monica Seles

No one has won Roland Garros younger. Monica Seles was 16 when she beat Steffi Graf in the 1990 Paris final, a left-hander who hit two-handed off both wings, took the ball on the rise and grunted through every stroke. The sound drew complaints; the tennis redefined power in the women's game. Her 9 major titles split four Australian Opens, three at Roland Garros and two US Opens, and eight of them came before she turned 20.

On 30 April 1993, during a quarterfinal in Hamburg, a spectator stabbed the 19-year-old world No. 1 in the back with a knife, wanting Graf restored to the top ranking. Seles did not play for more than two years. She returned in August 1995 and won the 1996 Australian Open within months, beating Anke Huber for a fourth Melbourne title. Born in Novi Sad, she finished with 53 career titles and 178 weeks at world No. 1, and the game never stopped wondering what the missing years would have held.
