Nadia Petrova

Nadia Petrova was built for this: her father Viktor threw the hammer, her mother Nadezhda Ilyina ran the 4x400m relay to bronze at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and the daughter inherited a serve built like a field event. She reached two Roland Garros semifinals on that engine, losing to Kim Clijsters in 2003 and Justine Henin in 2005, never further at a major. Her nearest brush with the top came in spring 2006: titles in Amelia Island, Charleston and Berlin, the last over Henin, a 15-match streak an ankle injury ended just before Roland Garros. It carried her to a career-high No. 3 that May.

Doubles gave her the finish singles never did. Paired with Maria Kirilenko, she beat Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 6-1, 6-4 to win the 2012 WTA Championships. Her mother's death in a car accident in December 2013 pulled her off the tour, injuries kept her away longer, and she retired in January 2017 at 34, 13 career titles the tally left by that athletic bloodline.
